This isn’t true everywhere, but I live in Florida, and here, it is officially spring. Sun shining! Birds singing! I love that debut warm weekend of the year when I can put on shorts for the first time in months and go to the beach.

February, yet again – When love isn’t pretty

I’m not sure if you’re all aware of this, but according to various news sources, apparently the economy is broken. So for this “it’s-not-really-a-recession-but-jeez-it-sure-feels-like-one” only, this month I’m giving you three mixtapes for the price of one! (There’s also going to be a special guest mixtape, again from the lovely and talented Andrew Tan, once I figure out all the songs he put on there for me.) In the interest of full disclosure, I made this mixtape for Andrew in our grand yearly tradition of trading Valentine’s Day mixes, but when you’re tightening your belt, sometimes you end up with secondhand goods. This mixtape rounding out the trio is for when love isn’t necessarily mutual. It may involve collecting strands of your love’s hair and twisting them into a doll to sleep with.

Nearly every month has a holiday (sorry, August), and most of the time stores and supermarkets make it obvious what the next holiday coming up will be. February’s hits you in the face with pink and red pretty much right after the Christmas trees come down — Valentine’s Day, of course. I don’t care how trite or made-up you think Valentine’s Day is, it’s still a nice excuse to do something romantic. It can also be a good opening to finally make your feelings known to the one you’ve secretly been admiring. If that’s your plan, what better way than with a mixtape? Make the one that follows, and your admiree is sure to fall for you. (And if they don’t, then they’re clearly classless trash, and you’re better off without them.)

So it’s officially 2009 — also known as the future. While I’m thoroughly disappointed that we don’t each already have a robot maid and a hoverboard, that’s no reason not to make this a great year. After all, new years are all about new beginnings, fresh hopes and making resolutions you have no intention of keeping. What better way to kick off the new year and get yourself motivated than with — surprise — a mixtape? You can listen to it while you’re exercising, or dieting, or concentrating on not biting your nails, or whatever you’ve picked as your resolution yet again that will probably be forgotten by next week. November – The Greatest Holiday of All

It’s November, so what’s the first thing you think of? Well, yes, the election is pretty important. But what next? OK, I admit the weather change has been quite nice. But after that, what’s the first thing you think of? … You know what, never mind. I’ll tell you: The answer is Thanksgiving.
I personally love Thanksgiving for the obvious reason: food, and lots of it. After music and being snarky, food is my third favorite thing. And that’s what this holiday is all about — eating too much, turning on some football and then passing out.
I figured that this month, I should make a mixtape to help ease myself — and you, my gracious readers — into the post-turkey nap. The track listing below is full of slow, dreamy songs that should have you sleeping off the stuffing in no time. And if you don’t make it through the whole tape the first time, don’t worry — after waking up, just go make yourself a leftovers sandwich and repeat the process as many times as you want.

I know whenever I find out the woman I’ve fallen in love with is actually a man, the first thought to cross my mind is the distinct lack of a mixtape to embody my situation.

That’s never happened to you, you say? And you also mean to tell me you’ve never dressed in drag to get a new career or to fool some Midwestern townspeople? What about finding out your housekeeper/nanny is actually your ex-husband? Maybe I just watch too many movies.

Regardless, androgyny is so in, and so is this mixtape. At least, I plan for it to be. It’s a work in progress. So if you can think of any more songs to add along this general theme, please leave a comment!

Apparently the answer is “to church.”

This is the first guest mixtape I’ve gotten, of course from the lovely and talented Andrew Tan, currently residing in San Diego. This mixtape is awesome even for works of his caliber, though. I absolutely love it.

Here is the preface he sent with it:

“A couple times in my life I’ve been told, “You meet a nice girl in a church.” While I’m not sure I totally agree with the phrase, I’m fascinated that the two people who told me this could not have been more different. One was a girl, the other a guy. One went to church, the other not so much. One knew me since the start of college, the other, a few hours.
